What if I told you the Greater East Side Unity Memorial Church Of God In Christ started in a house? It began humbly. It blossomed into a beacon of faith.
The Greater East Side Unity Memorial Church Of God In Christ stands on Mt. Elliott Avenue. It is more than bricks and mortar. It is a testament to faith and community.
Pastor Robert Butts Jr. answered God’s call in 1995. He opened the East Side Unity Church of God in Christ. It was in a 3-bedroom house. This house stood on Mt. Elliott and East Kirby.
In 1997, Supt. Robert Butts Jr. and the church family began building here. They built the current edifice at 5401 Mt. Elliott Ave. Even then, there was a prophecy. The church was being built too small. It would not fulfill the vision for East Side Unity.
Pastor Butts preaches with the power of the Holy Ghost. In 2014, Bishop Welton Lee Lawrence appointed Supt. Butts. He became the Administrative Assistant for the Michigan Region. This was within the Church of God in Christ Inc.
First Lady Evangelist Juanita C. Cooper-Butts also serves. She uses her gifts in many ways. She works with the Youth and Women Departments. She embodies Proverbs 31:10-31. She is a virtuous woman.
She leads workshops during Friday Evangelistic Service. These workshops enhance Christian living. She is the Financial Secretary for the Women’s Department. She also serves as the Jurisdictional Youth President. Many admire her love for God. They say she is a light that never burns out.
