The story of Greater Corinth Baptist Church begins in 1905. It was initially named East End Baptist Church. Reverend Brooks was the first pastor. The founders included Father Anderson and Reverend N.T. Shelton. Early trustees included Eze Haywood and A.W. Wallace. The first church building was a simple three-room house. It was donated by the family of A. Horton.
In those early days, the congregation faced many challenges. They persevered through faith and determination. In 1916, Reverend W. B. Meyers became the third pastor. He served for 25 years. Under his leadership, the church grew. It progressed from three frame buildings. It became a stately two-story stucco building. The church changed its name to Corinth Baptist Church.
Then in 1941, Reverend Meyers resigned. Dr. J. H. Hardeman became the fourth pastor. The church officially became Greater Corinth Baptist Church. Under Dr. Hardeman, the church paid off a significant debt. The Charlie Bellinger Estate was purchased. The old church became the Good Samaritan Hospital. A new church site was built. It included a parsonage, nursery school, and community center.
In 1950, the church mourned Dr. Hardeman’s death. Later that year, Dr. B. Tyree Alexander became the fifth pastor. In 1955, the church celebrated burning its mortgage. Under Dr. Alexander, the church added a second story to the parsonage. They installed central heat and air conditioning. Over 1000 people were baptized.
October 1981 was a sad time. The church mourned the passing of Dr. B. Tyree Alexander. He had served for 31 years.
Dr. D. J. Winters became the sixth pastor in 1982. He embraced a holistic ministry. The first female deacons and trustees were appointed. The sanctuary underwent a major renovation.
In 1991, Dr. Carl Johnson became the seventh pastor. Under his leadership, the church paid off its mortgage early. New facilities were added. These included new restrooms, a new roof, and a new sound system.
After Dr. Johnson retired, several pastors served. These included Rev. Kenneth A. Brown and Dr. D. J. Winters. In 2015, Rev. Stanley D. Sparrow became the ninth pastor. The gymnasium was renovated. It was dedicated as the Hamilton-Lott Fellowship Hall. The old parsonage became the Youth Center. In 2018, the campus was recognized as a local historic site. The Bellinger Mansion was rededicated.
Today, Greater Corinth Baptist Church continues its mission. It ministers to those seeking a relationship with the Lord. It teaches the Word of God. It helps those in need in the community. The church offers various ministries and services. These include Sunday School, worship services, and Bible study.
