Greater Christ Baptist Church

On a crisp autumn day in 2022, a new chapter began at Greater Christ Baptist Church in Detroit. The Reverend Dr. Micah R. Gaines arrived from Lexington, Kentucky, ready to lead the congregation. Greater Christ Baptist Church, a pillar of the Detroit community, welcomed its fourth senior pastor. He succeeded the retiring Dr. James C. Perkins. Dr. Gaines, a lifelong learner and preacher, brought a wealth of experience and a passion for community engagement. His impressive educational background includes a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary. His dissertation focused on the evolving landscape of ministry in the 21st century, “The Church Has Left The Building: A Model for Virtual Ministry in the 21st Century.” Dr. Gaines’s commitment to education extends beyond his own pursuits. At Greater Christ Baptist Church, he spearheaded initiatives for new ministry development and community outreach. He also championed scholarships for student members, further solidifying the church’s role in nurturing future generations. His leadership has fostered tremendous growth, expanding the church’s reach both locally and globally. Greater Christ Baptist Church saw increased membership and a strengthened digital presence, connecting with national and international audiences. Beyond the church walls, Dr. Gaines actively engages with the community. He holds leadership positions in organizations like the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and Vicinity and the Progressive National Baptist Convention. Before coming to Greater Christ Baptist Church, Dr. Gaines served as Pastoral Assistant to his father, Reverend Richard Gaines, for six years. He also contributed to ministries at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston, New Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church in Birmingham, and Union Branch Baptist Church in Chesterfield. His journey has been one of service and dedication to the Lord’s Church. In his personal life, Dr. Gaines is married to Adrienne Marie Cosby, a graduate of Fisk University and the Syracuse University Newhouse School of Public Communications. They are proud parents to their son, Micah Richard II. Dr. Gaines believes that God’s work should never surprise us, but rather inspire us to expand our expectations. His arrival at Greater Christ Baptist Church marked a new beginning, filled with hope and promise for the future.
