Step into the shoes of a Houston resident in 1938. Picture this bustling city. Now focus on the Fifth Ward. Here stands Greater Bethlehem Baptist Church. It’s a newly purchased building. A group of dedicated Christians Rev H B Bennett and trustees Viree Williams Fred and Lonnie Brown T R and Ernest Carr purchased it from Sol and Gussie Coleman. They dedicated it to God on August 8 1938. This wasn’t just a building. It was a beacon of hope a sanctuary in the heart of a community.
Greater Bethlehem Baptist Church quickly became a spiritual home. Five different pastors served in its early years. Rev J L Gaston Rev George Rev W L Gayton and Rev J E Nettles each contributed to its growth. Rev J E Nettles spearheaded a major remodeling project in 1957. He added a parsonage significantly enhancing the church’s facilities.
The next chapter of Greater Bethlehem’s story began with Rev M L Jackson. He became pastor in 1958. Under his leadership the church flourished. He oversaw a massive interior remodel. He also added the educational annex now known as the M L Jackson Fellowship Hall. This expansion was completed on May 3 1987. This shows the church’s commitment to both spiritual growth and community outreach.
Rev Jackson’s tenure spanned 47 years. He was beloved for his deep faith and his special connection to the youth. He involved young people in religious events locally statewide and nationally. He played a pivotal role in shaping the church into the vibrant institution it is today. Many young men were ordained into the ministry under his guidance. This underscores his lasting impact on the church’s growth and the wider religious community.
In 2005 Rev Jackson retired. Rev F D Johnson served as interim pastor. Then in 2006 Rev Mose A Jones was installed. He continued the legacy of growth and community engagement. He introduced midweek services and a radio ministry. He also oversaw the purchase of additional property behind the church. In 2018 the congregation embarked on another major renovation. They built a new sanctuary and purchased new pews. Their dedication to their faith is truly inspiring.
Today Greater Bethlehem Baptist Church stands as a testament to perseverance faith and community. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a living legacy built on the unwavering faith of generations of believers. The church continues to serve the Fifth Ward and beyond.
