Beneath the hum of machinery lies a story of clean water. The Great Neck WPCD – Manhasset Valley Pump Station isn’t just a utilitarian structure. It’s a vital organ in the circulatory system of Great Neck, ensuring the health and well-being of over 25,000 residents. The Great Neck Water Pollution Control District, which operates this pump station, has a rich history dating back to 1914. Initially, the district employed basic primary treatment, removing heavy solids and reducing their volume through digestion. The original plant could process one million gallons per day. As Great Neck grew, so did the need for more advanced wastewater treatment. The district expanded and upgraded its facilities over the years. By 1967, the East Shore Road plant, after several rebuilds and upgrades, could handle 2.7 million gallons per day. The Bayview Avenue plant, once a treatment facility itself, transitioned into a pump station. The Great Neck WPCD continued its evolution. By 1990, it could process 3.8 million gallons daily. A major upgrade in 2014 increased this capacity to 5.3 million gallons, allowing for the consolidation of the Village of Great Neck’s system. This upgrade wasn’t just about capacity. It introduced cutting-edge technologies, including a micro-turbine/solar co-generation facility that uses biogas from the treatment process to generate electricity and heat. The district also switched to a more environmentally friendly ultraviolet disinfection system, eliminating the use of chlorine and its discharge into Manhasset Bay. These improvements dramatically reduced nitrogen discharge and significantly increased the purity of the treated effluent. Further upgrades in 2018 to the anaerobic digesters doubled methane gas production and tripled storage. This allowed for the addition of a third microturbine, boosting electricity production to 50% and meeting 100% of the plant’s heating needs. The Great Neck WPCD – Manhasset Valley Pump Station, a key player in this story, stands as a testament to the district’s commitment to environmental stewardship and the health of its community. It silently works to protect our waters, allowing us to enjoy the beauty of Great Neck without a second thought.
