Hidden in plain sight, the Great Neck WPCD – Bayview Avenue Pump Station plays a crucial role. It’s a vital part of the Great Neck Water Pollution Control District’s story. The district has served the Great Neck area since 1914. The original Bayview Avenue site was a treatment plant itself. It was built in the late 1920s and later upgraded in the 1940s as the area grew. As Great Neck expanded, so did the need for more advanced wastewater treatment. The East Shore Road plant took on the main treatment responsibilities. Bayview Avenue transitioned into a pump station, supporting the larger system. Today, the Great Neck WPCD – Bayview Avenue Pump Station, along with nine others, helps move wastewater through 72 miles of sanitary sewers. It flows to the wastewater treatment plant on East Shore Road. This plant can handle an impressive 5.3 million gallons per day. The pump stations ensure this intricate system runs smoothly, serving over 25,000 residents. This vital infrastructure protects the health of the community and the beautiful bays of the area.
