Great Beds Light

Oyster shells crunched underfoot as Captain Dave Johnson stepped onto the gallery of Great Beds Light. The year was 1880, and he was the first keeper of this brand-new sparkplug lighthouse. Great Beds Light. It’s an odd name, isn’t it? It comes from the very oyster beds it stands on, right here in Raritan Bay. This cast-iron tower, rising 61 feet above the waves, was built to warn ships of the hazardous Great Beds Shoal. Imagine those ships, sailing from the Raritan River towards Lower New York Bay. Without this light, many would have met their end on those treacherous shallows. The lighthouse, with its distinctive white conical tower on a black pier, quickly became more than just a navigational aid. It became a symbol of South Amboy, New Jersey, a beacon of safety and a testament to human ingenuity. Now, picture Keeper Johnson in the lantern room. He’s carefully cleaning the fourth-order Fresnel lens. This massive lens, with its intricate prisms, could project a beam visible for six nautical miles. A flashing red light, a warning to stay clear. Life on the lighthouse was isolated. But Johnson wasn’t alone. His family lived with him, sharing the cramped quarters and the constant rocking of the waves. Over the years, Great Beds Light has seen its share of drama. Keepers have disappeared mysteriously, barges have collided with the iron pier, and the distant explosions of a munitions plant once rattled the lantern room. Yet, the light has always shone. Even after it was automated in 1945, Great Beds Light continued its vigil. Today, the oyster skiffs are mostly gone. But the bay is still busy with sailboats, fishing vessels, and pleasure craft. All rely on this steadfast beacon, a symbol of South Amboy, a sentinel of Raritan Bay. Great Beds Light, a testament to the enduring power of light against the darkness.
