Standing here in Grasdorf, it’s hard to believe that this place was only established in 1784. Grasdorf is a part of the municipality Grasberg. Let me tell you its story.

Before Grasdorf became the Grasdorf we know, the area was mainly moorlands. This transformation began when the Duchy of Bremen commissioned the drainage, cultivation, and colonization of these lands. Jürgen Christian Findorff was responsible for this huge task.

Findorff’s vision led to the construction of the Lutheran church in 1785-89. He designed it himself. This church became the heart of the area. It sat atop a sandy, grass-covered hill about 5 meters above sea level. This “grass mount” gave Grasdorf its name. The church served twelve new villages in the low moorlands.

The Lutheran church holds a special treasure. It has the only surviving small urban pipe organ made by Arp Schnitger. An orphanage in Hamburg originally ordered it in 1694. Grasdorf’s congregation purchased the organ in 1789.

During the Napoleonic Wars, Grasdorf changed hands several times. In 1807, the Kingdom of Westphalia took over the Duchy. France annexed it in 1810. By 1813, the Duchy was restored to the Electorate of Hanover.

Hanover became the Kingdom of Hanover in 1814. The Duchy was integrated. The area around Grasdorf became part of the Stade Region in 1823. Grasdorf itself officially developed as a village around the church in 1831.

Today’s Grasdorf includes several formerly independent municipalities. They were incorporated into Grasdorf in the 1970s and 1980s. Wörpedorf, Eickedorf, Rautendorf, Schmalenbeck, Dannenberg, and Tüschendorf. Also, Meinershausen, Huxfeld, Seehausen, Mittelsmoor and Otterstein joined. Adolphsdorf, Weinkaufsmoor, Wilstedter Moor, and Tarmstedter Moor also became part of Grasdorf.

Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, even named Adolphsdorf. He was stationed in the Electorate of Hanover. He attended the village’s founding in 1800. Grasdorf has a rich history shaped by land reclamation, religious heritage, and territorial shifts.
