In 2013, Grasbrookpark was reborn. It expanded to encompass over 7,000 square meters. The heart of Grasbrookpark is its large play area. Many features were salvaged and lovingly integrated from the original playground, creating a sense of continuity and history. You can find the large pirate ship, a beloved feature from the first playground, now nestled within the expanded park. Imagine children climbing the wooden mast, their laughter echoing through the park. The park is also designed for all ages. There’s a climbing forest with hanging bridges and a tree house. A willow labyrinth offers a tranquil escape, perfect for hiding and exploring. Fitness equipment caters to adults, while a central path meanders through the park, lined with curved wooden benches. These benches provide places for rest and contemplation. Residents played a key role in shaping Grasbrookpark’s design. The HafenCity Hamburg GmbH initiated a participatory process, involving children from the Katharinenschule and the local daycare center, along with their parents and other interested neighbors. This collaborative approach ensured that the park caters to all generations. The result is a diverse space that fosters a sense of community and belonging. Even the park’s landscaping reflects this collaborative spirit. The original design by EMBT Arquitectes Associats from Barcelona, envisioned a maritime, urban space with few trees. This vision evolved through the community engagement process, resulting in the lush, green park we see today. The park is a testament to how community input can enhance public spaces.
