How does a village founded by an abolitionist become a haven for freed slaves? That’s the story of Granville, a small community steeped in history. Right here in the parish of St. James, Granville stands as a testament to the fight for freedom and the enduring spirit of the Jamaican people. Founded in 1845, Granville wasn’t just another settlement. It was envisioned by Reverend William Knibb, a Baptist minister and fervent abolitionist, as a place where formerly enslaved people could finally experience true independence. Knibb purchased 90 acres of land, previously a farm known as Grumble Pen, with the support of the Missionary Society of England. This became one of the first “free villages” in Jamaica. These villages, inspired by the first one named Sligoville, offered refuge and a fresh start for those who had endured the horrors of slavery. Sadly, Knibb passed away in the very year Granville was founded. However, his legacy lived on. His widow, Mary Knibb, along with a Sergeant Wallace, took up the mantle, ensuring the well-being of the villagers and the success of Knibb’s vision. Some residents of Granville today still possess deeds signed by Mary Knibb herself, signifying legal ownership of their land. This legacy of empowerment and self-sufficiency is woven into the fabric of Granville. As you explore the village today, with its primary and infant school, a church, and a postal agency, remember the struggles and triumphs that shaped its identity. Granville serves as a reminder of the power of compassion, the fight for justice, and the enduring spirit of freedom.
