In 1908, a beacon of faith arose in South Denver. Grant Avenue Church, originally the Grant Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church, became the first Methodist congregation in the area. Designed by prominent Denver architect Harry J. Manning, the church showcased the popular Gothic Revival style. Its spire-topped tower, masonry construction, arched windows, and unique stained glass made it a striking landmark. Grant Avenue Church quickly became more than just a place of worship. It evolved into a vibrant community hub, hosting activities from sports to socials, especially for local youth. Names like Speer, Iliff, Byers, and Evans, prominent figures in Denver’s history, were among its supporters. The church expanded in 1919 with a community center addition, further solidifying its role as a gathering place. The building boasts a 400-seat sanctuary, a 150-seat theater, several meeting rooms, a kitchenette, and one of Colorado’s finest historic pipe organs, still in use today. Over time, the congregation dwindled, and the building faced a potential future as lofts. However, in 2001, the United Methodist congregation gifted Grant Avenue Church to the community, hoping to preserve its legacy as a center for arts, culture, and spiritual activities. Thanks to grants and community fundraising, the building underwent significant renovations. These renovations included repainting, new carpeting, a central cooling system, and exterior restoration work. Funding partners included the Gates, Piton, and Boettcher Foundations, along with a grant from the State Historic Fund. Today, Historic Grant Avenue thrives as an event center, hosting a wide range of activities. Musical and theatrical performances, educational seminars, board meetings, galas, rehearsals, and religious services fill its spaces. Over 25 community groups and organizations, including the Mile High Freedom Band and the Rocky Mountain Ukulele Orchestra, call Grant Avenue Church home. The building continues to evolve. Recent renovations aim to further enhance its spaces, including restoring the roof and bell tower, upgrading audiovisual equipment, and revitalizing the sanctuary while preserving its historic beauty. Grant Avenue Church stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring legacy of a historic landmark.
