High on Mont Gros, the Grande Coupole stands as a testament to a banker’s dream. Raphaël Bischoffsheim, a man with a passion for the cosmos, envisioned an observatory that would rival the world’s best. In 1878, he began to bring that vision to life, selecting the peak of Mont Gros as the perfect location. He enlisted his friend, the renowned architect Charles Garnier, to design this temple of astronomy. Garnier, ever the artist, didn’t just design buildings, he crafted an experience. The Grande Coupole, also known as the Grand Équatorial, became the centerpiece of this astronomical haven. The Grande Coupole isn’t just a building, it’s a statement. A square base, reminiscent of an Egyptian mastaba, supports a circular wall. This wall cradles the magnificent dome, a masterpiece of engineering designed by none other than Gustave Eiffel. Imagine, a dome 23.9 meters in diameter, weighing nearly 100 tonnes, floating on a ring of water mixed with magnesium chloride. This ingenious solution, implemented by Garnier, allowed the dome to rotate smoothly, initially with a manual winch and later, in 1888, with an electric motor. The Grande Coupole housed a marvel of its time, an 18-meter-long telescope with a 76-centimeter diameter lens. In 1888, when the telescope first peered into the heavens, it was the largest in the world, briefly holding the title before being surpassed by the Lick Observatory’s telescope. Look closely at the entrance to the Grande Coupole. You’ll see a striking statue, “The Genius of Science,” also known as “Apollo Emerging from the Zodiac.” Crafted in 1884 by Christofle workshops from Paul-Armand Bayard de la Vingtrie’s design, this copper sculpture draws inspiration from Egyptian art. Its recent restoration in 2022 has returned it to its original glory. The Grande Coupole stands within the Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur, a site steeped in history and scientific discovery. Inside its walls, astronomers like Auguste Charlois made significant contributions, discovering 140 minor planets. Today, the Grande Coupole isn’t just a place for scientific observation, it’s a venue for events, a backdrop for music videos, and a testament to the enduring power of human curiosity and ingenuity. As you stand here, imagine the countless nights astronomers spent within the Grande Coupole, their eyes fixed on the vast expanse above, unraveling the mysteries of the universe.
