It’s a fusion of Indian, Creole, and Islamic styles, each contributing to its unique character. This breathtaking mosque is a testament to the rich history and culture of Mauritius, and it’s a crucial aspect of its vibrant Islamic heritage.

The Grand Riviere Mosque, also known as Jummah Masjid, has a fascinating story. It dates back to the 1850s, when Muslim merchants arrived in Mauritius and settled primarily in Port Louis. They recognized the need for a dedicated place of worship and so, in 1852, a group of merchants bought two properties in Queen Street. These properties became the foundation of the first mosque in the area, known as the “Mosque of the Arabs”.

Over time, the community grew, and the mosque became too small to accommodate the increasing number of worshippers. The solution? Expanding! Throughout the 1870s, more plots of land were acquired and generously donated to the mosque. Artisans shipped from India carefully crafted the mosque. In 1895, the expanded mosque was finally completed, occupying the entire block on which it stands. The original “Mosque of the Arabs” was incorporated as the main prayer hall into the larger, more impressive structure.

The mosque’s courtyard is a tranquil haven, a place for quiet reflection and prayer. In the centre of the courtyard, a majestic Indian Almond tree stands sentinel, a silent witness to the mosque’s enduring presence for over a century and a half. Under its shade, generations have gathered, prayed, and found solace.

The Grand Riviere Mosque is a place of peace, a reminder of the importance of faith and unity. It is a symbol of Mauritius’ multicultural tapestry, a testament to the remarkable resilience and spirit of its people. This mosque is truly a beacon of hope and inspiration, a place where faith and community find common ground.
