Listen closely. The Grand Orgue Groot Orgel Installation in Brussels is a masterpiece. It’s not just an organ it’s a marvel of engineering and artistry.

This magnificent instrument is housed within the Cathedral of St Michael and St Gudula. It’s a truly awe-inspiring sight. The organ’s history began in the spring of 2000. That’s when Gerhard Grenzing and his team installed this giant. They worked tirelessly in their El Papiol Barcelona workshop. The result is breathtaking.

The Grand Orgue isn’t just one piece. It’s a three-part wonder. There’s a central section. This houses the console four keyboards and pedal. It also boasts 63 stops. Flanking this are two impressive pedal towers. Imagine the sheer weight of it all thirty tons. It’s suspended like a swallow’s nest high above the cathedral floor. This unique positioning is key. It allows the sound to reflect beautifully off the walls and vault. This creates a rich and resonant sound throughout the entire cathedral. The acoustics are simply exceptional.

This is no ordinary organ. The Grand Orgue’s style is primarily baroque. However it perfectly accommodates neo-classical and modern music as well. The plenum alone a remarkable 25 ranks produces a deep rich sonority. It’s a signature sound of Northern European organs. This sound is further enhanced by flutes mutation stops and a wide array of reeds. Some reeds are uniquely Spanish horizontal trumpets called chamadas. An electronic combiner helps with registration.

Grenzing built the Grand Orgue in a very traditional way. The tracker action is mechanical for the keyboards and pedal. This is a nod to the organ-building techniques of the past. The same traditional methods were used for the windchests. Organists love this. They appreciate the responsiveness of Grenzing’s mechanical actions. The pipes themselves are also built and tuned traditionally.

Grenzing also employed modern materials. He used marine plywood for the windchests. This makes them extra durable and long-lasting. Metallic cables manage the pedal transmission. To support its considerable weight the organ uses a hidden metallic corset. This is covered by elegant wood panels. This ingenious support structure is essential. Without it this project would have been impossible. It provides organists with a feeling of incredible solidity and stability.

The Grand Orgue Groot Orgel Installation is more than just an instrument. It is a testament to skill and artistry a true treasure of Brussels. Its breathtaking sounds fill the Cathedral with majesty. It’s a place where music transcends time and space. This is a legacy that will continue to enchant for years to come.
