Completed in 1927, the Grand Junction Railroad Bridge stretches across the Charles River, a steel sentinel connecting Boston University to Cambridgeport. This bridge isn’t just a pathway for trains. It’s a vital link in Boston’s history, a story etched in steel and spanning decades. The Grand Junction Railroad itself dates back to 1847. It was originally chartered to connect the railways west and north of Boston with the bustling wharves of East Boston. The Grand Junction Railroad Bridge, a key component of this railway, has witnessed a fascinating evolution of transportation in this city. It has facilitated the movement of goods and people, shaping the urban landscape we see today. In 2009, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts began the process of acquiring several CSX rail lines. This included the Grand Junction tracks. The deal was finalized in 2010, marking a shift in the bridge’s ownership and future. The Grand Junction Railroad Bridge has not been without its challenges. In 2012, the bridge was temporarily closed due to its deteriorating condition, impacting rail traffic. Freight trains were rerouted on a significant detour. Even Amtrak and MBTA equipment were restricted to a mere 5 miles per hour while crossing. This underscored the bridge’s crucial role in the region’s transportation network. The bridge reopened after emergency repairs, only to close again in March 2013 for more extensive structural work. It reopened again in June of the same year. Today, the Grand Junction Railroad Bridge, having weathered storms and closures, stands as a testament to engineering resilience and historical significance.
