Deep within the sprawling expanse of Van Cortlandt Park, a secret lies hidden. These are the Grand Central Stones, silent witnesses to the birth of an iconic landmark. These 13 massive stone pillars, each standing nearly ten feet tall, aren’t just random rocks. They hold a fascinating connection to the heart of New York City: Grand Central Terminal. In 1905, the New York Central Railroad embarked on a quest to find the perfect material for their grand new station. They gathered these stones, samples from quarries across the country, and placed them here in Van Cortlandt Park. This was a real-world experiment, a weathering test to see which stone could endure the harsh New York winters. They called it an “urban Stonehenge” or “Cortlandthenge.” The railroad, along with the architectural firms of Reed & Stern and Warren & Wetmore, oversaw this years-long experiment. These massive samples of Indiana limestone, Stony Creek granite, Milford pink granite, marble, and more stood as testaments to the railroad’s commitment to building a lasting monument. After careful observation, two champions emerged: Indiana limestone and Stony Creek granite. The limestone graces the upper reaches of Grand Central Terminal, while the granite forms the base. The rest of the stones remained in the park, almost forgotten. Originally, there were 15 pillars. Today, only 13 remain. Their story might have been lost to time, if not for the Municipal Art Society. In 2017, they restored these forgotten monoliths, cleaning away years of graffiti and neglect. Now, they stand proudly once more. These Grand Central Stones are not just remnants of a bygone era. They are a tangible link to the past. They whisper tales of architectural ambition and the enduring power of nature. They offer a unique perspective on the creation of one of New York City’s most beloved landmarks. So, the next time you find yourself in Van Cortlandt Park, take a detour to visit the Grand Central Stones. Let these silent sentinels transport you back in time, to the dawn of a new era in transportation. They are a hidden gem, a testament to the enduring spirit of New York City.
