A temporary haven for bookworms. That’s what Grand Central Library was. Grand Central Library wasn’t just any library. It held a special place in the hearts of midtown Manhattan residents. It opened its doors in 2009. This was a temporary solution. The 53rd Street Library was under construction. Grand Central Library filled the gap. It served the community admirably. The lease was extended in 2015. Construction on 53rd Street lingered. Then came the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL). This massive 180000-square-foot library opened nearby. It represented a nearly $225 million investment. With two large modern libraries nearby Grand Central Library’s role diminished. The New York Public Library had to make a tough decision. Resources are limited. Strategic and equitable decisions were essential. Sadly Grand Central Library closed its doors on December 1 2022. Its lease wasn’t renewed. The decision was difficult. Communities grow attached to their libraries. Even temporary ones. But what made Grand Central Library truly special was its staff. These dedicated individuals will continue their work within the NYPL system. Some of Grand Central Library’s wonderful programming will continue at other branches. All the books remain part of the NYPL collection. They are accessible by request from any branch. Grand Central Library’s legacy lives on. Its memory cherished in the hearts of those it served. Visit the SNFL or 53rd Street Library today. Experience the amazing resources. Remember Grand Central Library’s contribution to the midtown community. A temporary branch with a lasting impact.
