Once a bustling airport now a creative hub. That’s the Grand Central Creative Campus in Glendale California.

This wasn’t always a place of imagination and innovation. In its early days the Grand Central Air Terminal was the first major airport in Los Angeles. Charles Lindbergh Amelia Earhart and even Douglas “Wrong Way” Corrigan all graced its runways. During World War II it served as a crucial training site. Thousands of Air Corps cadets and RAF recruits honed their skills there. Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes were based here too. It was a true center for aviation. But the age of larger planes brought change. Grand Central’s short runways and hilly surroundings became a problem. By 1959 its final runway closed.

The airport transformed into an industrial park. Low-rise buildings replaced hangars and runways. Then in 1961 a significant tenant arrived: Walt Disney Imagineering. For nearly 40 years Imagineering occupied a substantial portion of the park. They designed theme park rides and attractions from this very spot.

In 1997 Disney bought the entire 113-acre site. They had a grand vision. The old airport would become a modern creative campus. They wanted a high-tech hub attracting computer and technology companies. Imagineering and Disney’s new media divisions would anchor the campus.

The ambitious project involved creating four distinct areas. A 52-acre creative campus for Imagineering and other Disney units. A 27-acre media and technology campus to lease to other companies. A 24-acre TV and motion picture campus for sound stages and production. And an 18-acre area to be developed as needed. It’s a massive undertaking. This wasn’t just about building new structures. Disney also planned to restore the original Grand Central passenger terminal and control tower. These historic buildings would be turned into office spaces.

The plan was ambitious. Glendale officials welcomed the plan. They anticipated substantial job growth. They saw a transformation of the area into a significant technological and economic center. The Grand Central Creative Campus would transform the landscape. It would fuse history with innovation. It truly is a unique place. A place where aviation history meets the magic of Disney. The past present and future of creativity converge right here at the Grand Central Creative Campus.
