The Grand Army of the Republic was founded in 1866. Dr. Benjamin F. Stephenson created it for Union Army veterans. By 1890, it boasted over 490,000 members. The cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1899. It served as a memorial to Union Army soldiers. The Grand Army of the Republic Building opened in 1900.
