“Through the glorious calling and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. We will grow in the true knowledge and love of Him showing His salvation to the world.” That is the vision statement of Granada Hills Community Church. Founded to serve a growing community, this church has a unique history.
Let’s step back to when Granada Hills was mostly farmland. In 1947 a group of 30 people gathered with a vision. They believed this valley would boom after the war. These visionaries chartered Granada Hills Memorial Church. It was Community Presbyterian. Rev. Al McNair became its first pastor.
Originally, residents looked to San Fernando for their downtown. They went there to church and shopped. However, these founding members foresaw the need for a local church. They chose Presbyterian. Though not all were Presbyterian before. The church was named in honor of Henry West. He was very active in its founding.
Now, look at the north wall. Notice the mural of Christ walking on water. Granada Hills Community Church has a mission statement. “We will fulfill His calling through diligent study and obedience to His word, vigilant prayer, genuine worship, and loving ministry to all.”
The church celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1997. The celebration included a concert by the Cathedral Choir and the Kids of the Kingdom. Former pastors shared speeches. The dedication to the community remained strong throughout the years.
