Before you stands Graham African Methodist Episcopal Church a testament to faith resilience and community. Founded in 1867 this Charleston church boasts a rich history. Two acres in the Pineland were transferred to establish Graham AME. A storm later destroyed the original structure forcing the congregation to worship in a temporary Bush Tent. The church was named for either Bristal or John Graham a prominent figure in its early years. Initially Graham AME was a circuit church with one minister serving several locations. By 1976 the congregation had grown substantially necessitating a dedicated pastor. Reverend J.L. James served as the last circuit minister before Reverend J.E. Washington took over. The church also produced local ministers like Johnny Bennett and Benjamin Ezekiel Hamilton. Graham AME was one of several churches in St Andrew’s Parish where African Americans worshipped. The congregations supported each other. Members of one church attended services at another if needed. In more recent times Graham AME has become integrated maintaining an open-door policy. The church has expanded its facilities including a Sunday school a recreation building and a choir facility. New stained glass windows were installed. Today Graham AME Church thrives with a motto “We Enter to Worship We Depart to Serve” a powerful message echoing the dedication of its members throughout history. This church stands as a symbol of enduring faith and the strength of the Charleston community.
