Imagine a nation rising from the ashes of war. That’s South Korea. That is also where Seoul National University’s Graduate School of Public Health [GSPH] began. It is a story of resilience and dedication. It’s a story we’re about to explore right here.
The Graduate School of Public Health [GSPH] was established in 1959. It started as a one-year master’s program. Forty students attended classes in the School of Medicine building. This marked a pivotal moment for public health in Korea.
In 1962 the master’s program expanded. It became a two-year program accommodating 80 new students. The National Health Research Center was founded in 1966. This further solidified the school’s commitment to advancing health research.
The Graduate School of Public Health [GSPH] building was founded on the Yeongeon Campus in 1970. This was made possible through aid from the China Medical Board. The Community Health Institute was established in Chuncheon in 1972. The first Doctoral Program of Public Health in Korea opened in 1976.
The Department of Health Science and Services split in 1983. This resulted in the Department of Health Science and Services and the Department of Environmental Health. The Department of Health Science and Services was renamed the Department of Public Health Science in 1991.
In 2010 the Graduate School of Public Health [GSPH] Building moved to the Gwanak Campus. The school celebrated its 60th anniversary in April 2019.
The Graduate School of Public Health [GSPH] has two majors. These are Public Health and Health Care Management and Policy. Public Health Sciences involves research. It relates to health statuses of target groups. It also involves related determinants. It looks at changes of these conditions of policy business planning. It evaluates the resulting effects.
The Division of Public Health emphasizes research methods. It assesses and analyzes health and health determinants. This division has five majors. These are biostatistics epidemiology bioinformatics public health nutrition and health demography.
The Graduate School of Public Health [GSPH] stands as a beacon. It symbolizes South Korea’s commitment to public health. It began in the aftermath of war. It continues to shape the future of health. The Graduate School of Public Health [GSPH] has a lasting impact on the nation and beyond.
