Did you know that Grace United Methodist Church has faced not one, but two devastating fires? The original Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, built in 1895 on West 104th Street, was a marvel. Designed by J.C. Cady, it was one of the first churches built with an iron frame skeleton. Imagine the gleaming golden-russet brick and Longmeadow stone trim. A massive porch welcomed worshippers, and a 156-foot tower punctuated the New York City skyline. The interior boasted vibrant stained glass and a Sunday school room large enough for 850 pupils. This Grace United Methodist Church thrived for decades. It even shared its space with the St. Gerasimos Greek Orthodox Community and Iglesia Metodista Grace. Tragically, on December 11, 1983, a fire ravaged the grand structure. But the spirit of Grace United Methodist Church wasn’t broken. From the ashes arose a new complex. Designed by Prentice & Chan, Ohlhausen, it included a gabled sanctuary and an apartment building. This building provided housing for clergy and low-income families, a testament to the church’s commitment to community. This wasn’t the first fire in Grace United Methodist Church’s history though. Its predecessor, a small frame structure built in 1870, also met a fiery end, making way for the 1895 edifice. Today, Grace United Methodist Church stands as a symbol of resilience, a beacon of faith rebuilt not once, but twice. Its story reminds us that even in the face of destruction, hope and community can prevail.
