“Two churches, once separated by more than just distance.” That’s the story of Grace United Methodist Church, a testament to the power of unity and faith. You see, before we had the privilege of standing before First Grace United Methodist Church, there were two congregations: First United Methodist Church, historically white, and Grace United Methodist Church, historically Black. Grace United Methodist Church, once located on Iberville Street, faced its share of hardships. Hurricane Betsy in 1965 and the devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005 took their toll on the building. Meanwhile, First United Methodist Church, having moved twice before, found a home on Canal Street in 1960. Then came the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It was in the face of shared loss and a desire to rebuild that these two congregations, separated by a mile and years of history, found common ground. In 2007, they answered a powerful question: “Could we achieve more for our city as one united body of Christ?” And so, First Grace United Methodist Church was born, a beacon of hope and resilience in a recovering city. Today, this merged congregation thrives, bearing the legacy of two unique paths converging into one, proving that faith and unity can overcome any obstacle. What began with 60 devoted members has blossomed into a vibrant community of over 300. First Grace United Methodist Church stands as a testament to the transformative power of faith and the extraordinary things that happen when walls crumble and hearts open.
