Originally named Houston Theological Seminary, Grace School of Theology emerged from a shared vision. A pastor and laypersons sought a local evangelical Christian institution. They wanted to emphasize free grace. The story of Grace School of Theology begins with Dr. Charles Ryrie. His encouragement and advice proved pivotal.
The seeds of Grace School of Theology were sown in 2002. Seven dedicated men formed the initial Board of Trustees. They included Dr. Dave Anderson and Dr. Glenn Darby. Larry Allbritton and Mark Rae also joined. Jeffe Ready, Bill Diamond, and Bob Winslow completed the group. Dr. Dave Anderson now serves as the President of Grace. He is still a member of the Board.
Grace School of Theology is rooted in God’s grace. Dr. Dave Anderson carried the burden for this educational ministry. He planted churches in southern Texas for twelve years. Later, he served as Senior Pastor of Faith Bible Church. This was in The Woodlands, Texas, for eighteen years. Discussions with Dr. Darby and the Trustees led to Houston Theological Seminary. Early classes took place at Faith Bible Church and Cypress Bible Church.
The State of Texas granted a certificate of incorporation in May 2001. Classes started in the fall of 2002. Texas later restricted the use of “seminary” in institutional titles. As a result, Houston Theological Seminary became Grace School of Theology in March 2003. The Texas Supreme Court overturned this law in 2007. However, the school chose to keep its new name.
Strategically positioned in Houston, Grace’s main offices are in The Woodlands. They include classrooms, faculty offices, and the main Library. Grace School of Theology significantly grew over time. Teaching sites expanded to Beaumont, Midland, and San Antonio. Christian leaders in these areas provided support.
International initiatives gained priority. Opportunities emerged worldwide. Administrators and faculty evaluate each one. Current international teaching sites include Honduras and Mexico. Panama and the Philippines are also included.
Grace School of Theology offers various programs. These include undergraduate certificates and master’s programs. A Doctor of Ministry program is also available. Students in certificate and graduate programs participate in a Mentorship program. It focuses on discipleship, academics, ministry, and accountability.
Accreditation matters at Grace School of Theology. The institution belongs to the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools. It has been reaffirmed as a Category IV institution. Grace is also accredited by the Association of Theological Schools. This includes its Master of Ministry and Master of Arts in Biblical Studies. The Master of Divinity and Master of Theology programs are included too. The Doctor of Ministry programs also are part of this. Grace is a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability. This reflects financial integrity.
