Grace Presbyterian Church

Did you ever hear of a church born from the remnants of a space mission and a rock concert? Grace Presbyterian Church’s story began in 1969. While the world watched the moon landing and swayed to the music of Woodstock, a different kind of history was being made right here in Houston. Grace Presbyterian Church held its first service in December 1969. The congregation, a blend of St. Matthews Presbyterian and Second Presbyterian, gathered at Walnut Bend Elementary School. The very next Sunday, they christened their new community Grace Presbyterian Church. Grace Presbyterian Church wasn’t built in a day. For three years, the congregation worshipped in temporary locations. They finally dedicated their own gymnasium, fellowship hall, and education building in March 1972. The gymnasium served as both a worship space and a hub for community outreach. Recognizing the needs of their neighbors, Grace Presbyterian Church became a founding member of West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM). Grace Presbyterian Church continued to grow. In 1975, Grace School opened its doors, offering Christian education to local families. The Founders Chapel, dedicated in 1978, housed the original 1903 Kimball Moller pipe organ from Second Presbyterian Church. A new sanctuary followed in 1985 to accommodate the expanding congregation. Today, Grace Presbyterian Church’s mission is “living to make Jesus visible”. Their work extends from cooking classes at WHAM to mentoring students at Paul Revere Middle School. They partner with organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Living Water International, extending their reach far beyond Houston. Grace Presbyterian Church even supports Grace Girls School in Kenya. Fifty years after its humble beginnings, Grace Presbyterian Church stands as a testament to the power of faith and community. It’s a place where lives have been changed, where people have found love and purpose.
