Why an apple orchard on Broadway? That’s the question you might ask when you consider the history of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church. Grace Church stands on land that was once part of a sprawling orchard owned by Henry Brevoort, Jr. This idyllic setting, between 10th and 11th Streets, became the church’s home in the mid-19th century. The congregation’s first services, however, were held much further downtown at Broadway and Rector Street, starting in 1808. As New York City grew and expanded northward, Grace Church followed suit. By the 1830s, under the leadership of their rector, Thomas House Taylor, the church realized it needed to relocate to remain relevant. This led them to Brevoort’s orchard. The selection of the architect, James Renwick, Jr., is a fascinating story in itself. A young civil engineer with limited experience, Renwick was a surprising choice. His largest prior project had been a section of the Croton Reservoir. However, Renwick possessed talent, influential family connections, and a vision for a magnificent Gothic structure. Inspired by Taylor’s European tour of churches, Renwick embarked on designing Grace Methodist Episcopal Church. He relied heavily on books and stories, as Gothic architecture was relatively rare in the United States at the time. The result was a stunning example of Gothic Revival style. The church, consecrated in 1846, became a landmark in the city. Interestingly, the original structure was simpler than what we see today. The steeple was made of wood, not marble, and the windows lacked the vibrant stained glass that now depicts biblical scenes. Over time, Grace Methodist Episcopal Church evolved. The marble steeple was added in 1883. Catharine Lorillard Wolfe, a generous parishioner, funded the Chantry, a Sunday School chapel, and the breathtaking Te Deum stained glass window. Her generosity sparked a wave of donations, leading to the installation of numerous other stained glass windows. The church’s impact extended beyond its stunning architecture. It was a center for social outreach and community service. From its early days in Lower Manhattan with charity schools, to the Social Gospel movement championed by later rectors, Grace Methodist Episcopal Church played a vital role in serving the city’s growing immigrant population. The church offered various services, including daycare, job training, and recreational activities. Grace Methodist Episcopal Church continued to adapt throughout the 20th century. The choir school transformed into the co-educational Grace Church School. Pew rentals were abolished and women were welcomed onto the Vestry. The church has continued its mission of service and worship, adapting to the changing needs of the community and standing as a beacon of hope in New York City.
