Goziyon Madrasah

Could a madrasa ever be a symbol of enlightenment, even after its closure? Here, before the Goziyon Madrasah, that question hangs in the air. The Goziyon Madrasah, nestled in Bukhara’s historic Goziyon quarter, whispers tales of centuries past. Its very name, “fighters for faith,” connects it to Imam Gozi, one of the revered “forty martyrs for faith.” This madrasa isn’t just a building; it’s a tribute to knowledge and a testament to Bukhara’s rich history. Its one-story structure boasts a grand facade, while the older section features arched doorways adorned with ornaments. Inside, the high point of the dome displays a majestic inscription in gold and majolica. This poetic tribute honors both Muhammad Sharif, the benefactor, and the master teacher Fathulloh, who oversaw its construction in 1733-34. Although now closed as a school due to the rise of the Bolsheviks in the early 20th century, its legacy continues.
