During the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779–1783), General George Augustus Eliott, the then Governor of Gibraltar, likely used this very spot as his observation post. He could survey the battlefield, anticipate enemy movements, and direct his troops. Originally, Governor’s Lookout Battery housed a single, powerful 9.2-inch breechloading gun. This formidable weapon could reach targets 10,000 yards away, both on land and at sea. Think about that kind of firepower. It could pound Spanish land batteries and control the Bay. Over time, the armament changed. In 1886, a 9-inch rifled muzzle-loading gun replaced the original. By 1904, plans were afoot to install four 9.2-inch breechloading guns, though ultimately, only a single Mk X gun on a Mk V mounting was put in place. The battery’s life as an active military installation ended in 1940 when its last gun was removed during World War II. But Governor’s Lookout Battery didn’t fade into obscurity.
