A grand estate it stands. Government House. Majestic. Imposing. Right before your eyes.

This isn’t just a building. It’s a living history. Government House is the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man. A post of power and prestige. It sits proudly on Governor’s Road in Onchan. This has been the Lieutenant Governor’s home since 1863. Owned by Tynwald since 1903.

But its story began long before that. Much earlier. It started as Bemahague Farm. Built sometime between 1820 and 1830. The name itself is a blend of Norse and Gaelic. Suggesting an ancient heritage. Perhaps even predating the Norse settlements of the 9th century. Think of the families who lived here. The Christians. The Heywoods. Prominent Manx families. Their lives unfolded within these walls. Before it was Government House.

Robert Heywood a wealthy Douglas merchant owned it. He let the property to various tenants. His nephew Peter Heywood was even a midshipman on the HMS Bounty. Imagine the stories shared within these walls. Stories of seafaring adventures. Of island life.

Then came Joshua Farrer. He did extensive rebuilding. Giving the farm a Regency makeover. Completely transforming its appearance. He transformed this simple farm into something much grander.

In 1863 the Lieutenant Governor Henry Brougham Loch moved in. The island’s capital had shifted to Douglas. A bustling commercial hub. Government House became the perfect location for the Lieutenant Governor. Close enough to the action. Yet still offering a sense of seclusion.

Further renovations followed. In 1871 Gustavus Hamilton an architect from Liverpool created plans for alterations and extensions. Then in 1890 James Cowle a local architect and builder. And again between 1903 and 1906 by William Edward Willink and Philip Coldwell Thicknesse. They added wings. Extended the reception rooms. Built a new grand staircase. The house grew. Expanded. Adapted to the needs of the times.

Even today. Government House stands as a testament to its rich past. The building has seen countless official functions. Receptions. Dinners. Foreign dignitaries have walked these halls. The crystal chandeliers. The embroidered bedspread. These details speak of elegance and grandeur. They whisper of the lives lived here. The history made.

And so you stand before Government House. A site of power. A repository of memories. A place where the past. Present and future. All meet.
