Opened in 1906, Govanhill Library stands as one of Glasgow’s Carnegie Libraries. Andrew Carnegie gifted £100,000 to the city in 1901. Twelve libraries were built with this donation. Govanhill Library is one of them.

Designed by James R. Rhind, the Govanhill Library showcases Baroque style. Notice the columns and the sandstone dome. Statues adorn the roof. They depict a woman reading to children. These statues symbolize knowledge.

Govanhill Library faced a recent lighting upgrade. The old luminaires were inefficient. Glasgow Life sought to make savings. Dextra Group worked with Glasgow Life and City Building LLP on the project. Integrated sensors now provide individual lighting control. High ceilings posed an access challenge.

In 2015, the Diversity Windows project added stained-glass windows. These windows tell the stories of Govanhill’s people through colourful artwork.

Govanhill Library offers many services. It provides a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. A wide range of books caters to adults and children. Fourteen PCs offer free internet access. The library houses collections in Urdu, Chinese, Punjabi, and Slovakian.

The Govanhill Library is run by Glasgow Life. It is a charity focused on inspiring people. They want to encourage engagement in culture and sport.

Govanhill Library also features accessible facilities. A disabled ramp is located at the entrance. Level access is available throughout the building. A disabled toilet has step-free access. It is wide enough for wheelchairs. Grab rails and an easy turn lock are available. Assistance dogs are welcome with water bowls.

Your Glasgow Libraries membership card grants access to all 33 Glasgow Libraries. It also unlocks the 24/7 online library.

The Govanhill Library’s story is not just about books and buildings. It is about community and knowledge. Govanhill Library is a place where stories come alive. It is a space where everyone is welcome.
