Govan & Linthouse Parish Church

Gazing upon Govan & Linthouse Parish Church, can you sense the echoes of its past lives? This seemingly singular church, a prominent landmark in Govan, carries within its stones the legacy of several congregations. It stands as a testament to the evolving religious landscape of Glasgow. Govan & Linthouse Parish Church wasn’t always its name. It began its journey in 1873 as St. Mary’s Free Church, a creation of architect Robert Baldie. His neo-Gothic design, with its distinctive three-gabled façade and trio of entrance archways, still graces Govan today. The church’s history is a tapestry woven with threads of unity and transformation. Born from the Free Church of Scotland, it joined the United Free Church in 1900. Then, in 1929, it became St. Mary’s Church of Scotland. The story doesn’t end there. In 1975, St. Mary’s embraced the congregation of Fairfield Parish Church, becoming St. Mary’s Fairfield. Just seven years later, Trinity Govan Parish Church also joined the fold, and the church was renamed New Govan Church. The final chapter of this union unfolded in 2008. Govan Old and Govan New parishes merged with Linthouse, creating the Govan & Linthouse Parish. The New Govan building, our very own Govan & Linthouse Parish Church, assumed the role of the main church. Even during its recent restoration between 2014 and 2018, when the congregation worshipped at the Linthouse building, the spirit of this church remained vibrant. The grand reopening on March 26, 2018, marked not just a return to a beloved space but a continuation of its rich history. Today, under the guidance of Reverend David Gray, Govan & Linthouse Parish Church thrives as a vital hub for the community. This isn’t just a church; it’s a living story, etched in stone and echoing through time.
