Gould Mesa Trail Camp has a few tent sites scattered around. You’ll find some privacy. You are also close to the action. A nearby stream is a refreshing water source. Remember to bring a filter. The stream is great. If you have a filter, there is no need to carry water.
For hikers, a six-mile trail leads to two waterfalls just behind campsite one. Cool off there after exploring. Hikers and mountain bikers frequent the area. Expect some friendly faces. It’s not overwhelming.
Gould Mesa Trail Camp doesn’t have running water or many amenities. It does have fire rings for campfires under the starry sky. Be ready for a primitive experience. There are few facilities like toilets and showers. The natural beauty makes Gould Mesa a solid camping choice.

Equestrians can use the hitching rail with 52 linear feet. Gould Mesa Trail Camp is two miles from Ventura Street on the Gabrielino Trail. Starting in Altadena near the Jet Propulsion Laboratory means walking through riparian groves. Enjoy a tranquil stream with steep ridges. The trek to Gould Mesa Trail Camp is 5.1 miles round trip. There is 300 feet of elevation change.
To get here from Interstate 210 WEST in La Canada, take Windsor Ave. Turn right on Windsor to Ventura St. and park. Take the Gabrielino Trail two miles to the campground. Or, from Interstate 210, exit at Angeles Crest Highway (Hwy. 2). Head north about two miles. Park on the right before entering the forest. Hike the dirt road one mile past the power substation to the campground.
Remember, you must have a California campfire permit to build a fire at Gould Mesa Trail Camp. Campsites are first-come, first-served. Enjoy free established camping on government land. Expect limited or no services.
