Ever wondered where Nuremberg’s oldest free theatre resides? Right here stands the Gostner Hoftheater. Founded in 1979 the Gostner Hoftheater is more than just a theatre. It is a cultural cornerstone.

The Gostner Hoftheater began its life as a Werkstatttheater. It was a theatre around the corner. It quickly evolved. Within a decade, it presented its own productions. These productions featured professional actors and directors. Now, it stands as Nuremberg’s second most important theatre. The Staatstheater Nurnberg is first.

The Gostner Hoftheater is located in a converted toy factory. This gives it a unique and intimate atmosphere. The main stage accommodates 82 visitors. Almost always the seats are sold out. This popularity speaks volumes about the theatre’s appeal.

But the Gostner Hoftheater is not limited to its main stage. The Hubertussaal serves as an alternate venue. It is located on Dianastraße. This venue can host 250 to 300 spectators. The Hubertussaal with its Art Nouveau ambience hosts larger productions. Selected guest performances and concerts occur here.

The Gostner Hoftheater’s program is diverse. It focuses on contemporary pieces. Young, contemporary authors are highlighted. Modern adaptations of classics are also staged. The program includes cabaret, concerts and dance. Literature and theatre performances from free groups enrich the program.

The Gostner Hoftheater also emphasizes youth theatre. Since 2001, it has organized the licht.blicke theatre festival. This biennial event presents high-caliber performances for young audiences.

Let’s not forget the Theaterkneipe Loft. It resides in the Gostner Hoftheater building. This theatre pub hosts music, cabaret and readings. Art exhibitions complement Gostner’s own productions. Every Tuesday the Loft becomes a playground for jazz. Other arts like soap operas and songwriting can be enjoyed here. From Wednesday to Saturday, the Loft serves as a foyer and living room. It’s a gallery and pub too.

And for those who want to delve deeper the Gostner offers the GostnerCast. This monthly podcast takes you behind the scenes. Artists are interviewed and insights are shared.

The Gostner Hoftheater has received numerous awards. These include the Nuremberg-Stipendium and the AZ-Stern des Jahres. The City of Nuremberg’s Culture Promotion Prize was awarded to them. They have also received the Bavarian Theatre Award. Gisela Hoffmann, the artistic director, received the Citizen Medal of the City of Nuremberg.

The Gostner Hoftheater is more than a venue. It is a vibrant part of Nuremberg’s cultural landscape. Its commitment to contemporary works, youth engagement, and diverse programming makes it a unique and essential part of the city.
