Founded in February 1984, Gospel Truth Tabernacle of God stands as a testament to faith. Mother Teveta Kirkwood founded this church. Her sons Donald L and Clinton Jr aided her. Her brother Felton Williams Jr also helped. They incorporated G.T.T. in Michigan. Mother Kirkwood followed the Holy Spirit. She appointed her husband Elder Clinton W. Kirkwood Sr. as the first pastor. Together, they began worship in their basement.
Sister Ola Thomas was the first member. She was Mother Kirkwood’s sister. Within a year, the church outgrew the basement. The Lord moved them to Brightmoor Recreation Center. This was in Detroit. Many more joined the fellowship there. Preaching the word of God and continuing in prayer led to a blessing. The church moved to its present sanctuary. It is located at 5169 Ogden Street. It is on the corner of McGraw in Detroit.
In 1999, Gospel Truth Tabernacle of God celebrated a Mortgage Burning Service. In 2000, Elder Kirkwood was ordained a Bishop. Apostle Henry Brownlee performed the ordination. Bishop Ronald Hall also participated. Bishop Henry Wayne White and Bishop Earl Fields joined. Elder Maurice “Ted” Beard was also present. During this time, Bishop Kirkwood’s second son, Donald, felt called to ministry. Bishop Kirkwood retired in August 2002 due to illness.
