Founded in 1950 Gospel Mission Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. Its journey began at 8126 South Central Avenue. A small group of dedicated Christians gathered. Rev Henry M Beechan led this initial congregation. They were a mission band at first. By May 14 1951 they became the Gospel Mission Missionary Baptist Church. Eight names filled the initial church roll. Mary Paskell served as Sunday School Secretary. The Pastor’s children Charles and Delores Beechan also joined.
The church grew. In 1954 it incorporated. It moved to 7321 Miramonte Boulevard in 1955. Rev W D Manus pastored briefly. Sadly illness cut short his time. Rev E R Williams took over in 1957. He served until 1962 guiding the church’s growth. Deacon Robertson became pastor then. He served for twelve years. He established a Head Start program at the Miramonte location.
Rev Henry a loyal assistant to Robertson became pastor in 1974. He oversaw improvements. New pews carpets and windows were added. Rev Santee Moore succeeded him in 1978. His leadership saw the church flourish. Membership grew significantly. Improvements continued. A church van was purchased. The Kedren Headstart program was remodeled.
Gospel Mission Baptist Church joined the National Convention USA. It also joined the Southern Baptist Convention and the Los Angeles District Association. In 1995 the church moved to its current location at 7301 South Avalon Boulevard. Grace to You Baptist Church merged with Gospel Mission in 1996. Further renovations were completed under Pastor Moore’s guidance. Sadly Pastor Moore passed away in 1998. Isaac Burton led the church temporarily. The church purchased a duplex for senior housing during this time.
Rev Calvin Guidry became pastor in 1999 but left in 2000. Following further prayer Rev Raymond A Dennis became pastor in August 2000. He continues to lead Gospel Mission Baptist Church. Under his leadership the church obtained 501C3 status. It also added cellular and solar infrastructure. A Spanish ministry Leon De Judea partnered with the church. The church expanded its outreach programs. It provided support for foreign missions. Community outreach events such as food drives and school supply giveaways have become a staple. The church remained open throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. No members were lost to the virus. Gospel Mission Baptist Church continues to serve its community. It lives out its motto Jesus Never Fails.
