The Church of God in Christ has a rich history. Elder Mason was converted in November 1878. He was baptized by his brother I.S. Nelson. In 1893, he began his ministry.
In 1895, Bishop Mason met Elders C.P. Jones, J.E. Jeter, and W.S. Pleasant. Together, they conducted a revival in 1896 in Jackson Mississippi. The revival had far-reaching effects.
In 1897, these preachers returned to Jackson. Bishop Mason delivered his message from the courthouse entrance. Later, a gin house became their meeting place. This was the start of the Church of God in Christ.
While seeking a name for the church, the name “Church of God in Christ” was revealed to Bishop Mason. All the brethren unanimously agreed to the name.
In March 1907, Elder Mason attended a revival in Los Angeles. He sought the outpouring of the Holy Ghost. He received the Holy Ghost and began to proclaim this experience.
A division arose among the elders. Some regarded speaking in tongues as a delusion. This led to the organization of the first Pentecostal General Assembly of the “Church of God in Christ.”
Overseer C. H. Mason was chosen as the General Overseer and Chief Apostle. He established doctrine and appointed overseers. The church grew from ten congregations to the largest Pentecostal group in America.
Today, Gospel Center Church of God in Christ continues to serve its community. It provides a welcoming space for worship and spiritual growth. It truly embodies love and commitment to Christ. May we all find inspiration in its enduring legacy.
