Sir Donald Gordon, founder of Liberty Life and Liberty International, envisioned a business school deeply rooted in the African context. His generous contribution, along with a substantial investment from the University of Pretoria, brought GIBS to life. The University of Pretoria itself had a rich history in business education, with its Graduate School of Management having pioneered the first MBA program outside North America in 1949.
