A 28-meter-tall ochre mast stands proudly. It’s a smaller version of the Gorch Fock’s iconic mast. This is the Gorch-Fock-Übungsmast in Flensburg. It’s more than just a training aid. It’s a testament to safety and improved training for future naval officers.

The Gorch-Fock-Übungsmast was officially handed over to the Marineschule Mürwik on June 21 2012. This wasn’t just a simple ceremony. It was a significant event for the German Navy. The mast’s construction followed a tragic accident involving a cadet. This led to much discussion about training conditions aboard the Gorch Fock.

The mast cost 1.4 million Euros. It was built in the Rostock Tamsen shipyard. The mast’s design is faithful to the original. It stands slightly away from the main school buildings. This helps to avoid distracting students during training. A wind warning system alerts instructors when winds become too strong for safe climbing.

The Gorch-Fock-Übungsmast allows for realistic training. It familiarizes officer cadets with the heights and movements required. It replicates the working conditions found in the rigging. The mast is equipped with safety lines and a centrifugal clutch. This system provides extra safety for the cadets. Six cadets can train simultaneously. The lighting system enables safe training even at night.

The improved training on the Gorch-Fock-Übungsmast is rigorous. Cadets receive 33 hours of training before they are permitted on the Gorch Fock itself. This rigorous training reflects similar practices used by the Italian Navy. It emphasizes physical fitness and prepares cadets for the demanding climb up the ship’s mast. The Gorch Fock Übungsmast is thus a symbol of change. It reflects the German Navy’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its future officers. The dedication to safer training is clear. It’s a visible representation of the lessons learned. The mast ensures that future journeys aboard the Gorch Fock will be safer.
