Far from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood lies a sanctuary. Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. Founded in 1893 under Reverend John H Reffels’ leadership, the church has a rich history. It reflects the enduring spirit of its congregation.
From 1913 to 1938, Reverend Lois Johnson served as pastor. Deacons like Joe Manuel and Scott Maxwell faithfully served the church. They laid the foundation for future generations.
The period from 1958 to 1982 saw many spiritual leaders. Reverend Harry Donahue and Reverend Willie Dixon led the congregation. Reverend E.G. Dickey and Reverend Joe Nicholas Sr. also contributed. Reverend Nathan Walker, Reverend Harry Tartt, and Reverend W.T. Guice guided the church. Reverend Otis Fleeton and Reverend S.M. Robinson also provided spiritual leadership. Under Reverend Otis Fleeton, Brothers Michael Bowser and Thomas Boyd Sr. became deacons. Wayne Harris and Robert Stewart joined them.
In 1983, Reverend Harry L Toussaint became the spiritual leader. The church experienced significant growth under his guidance. New classrooms and a cafeteria were built. An extension to the entrance enhanced the church’s appeal. The choir stand and balcony were added. Exterior bricks gave the structure a new look. Beyond physical growth, spiritual growth flourished. Many souls found salvation. They grew closer to Christ.
Deacons like Harold Bowser Sr. and Will Bryant served faithfully. Harold Daniels Sr. and Henry McCathen Sr. also dedicated themselves. Ernest Martin and Alfred Singard contributed. Warren Woods and George Johnson Sr. served with commitment.
Associate Ministers like Robert Price and Larry Holmes preached. Wallace Powell and Harry Scott were licensed under Reverend Toussaint. Harold Bowser, Valli Battle, Denise Boyd, and Lorraine Price also served. Patrick Walker Sr. and Ramon Walker Sr. were ordained as Deacons.
October 6, 2007, marked the ordination of Deacons Lish Holloway and Jarriet White. They answered the call to serve God’s church. The Youth Ministry was reorganized. Children’s Church and Youth Bible Study classes were implemented. Mime and Praise Dance Ministry Groups were formed. The Vernelia McCathen Scholarship Ministry hosted events. Banquets, musicals, and talent shows raised funds for students. The Male Choir started its Crusade for Christ. “Singing in the Park Under the Oaks” became an annual event. A Praise Team Ministry was organized. It emphasized praise and worship.
In March 2012, Valli Battle, Lorraine Price, and Christine Simpson were ordained. This ordination service was a first for the church. Pastor Toussaint supervised the occasion closely.
The Women’s Ministry empowers women. It helps them become stronger for God’s kingdom. An annual women’s retreat provides spiritual nourishment. The Evangelist Outreach, Usher, and Nurse’s Guild host a Wellness and Health Fair.
January 21, 2017, saw the ordination of Tyrone Bowers and John W. Dedeaux. Joseph Lamberth and David Rush joined the Board of Deacons.
After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Church Disaster Relief Committee formed. It met immediate needs. A Meals On Wheels Program assisted the elderly. The feeding program continues weekly. Donations and grants support its mission.
