“And Thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted whom I have filled with the Spirit.” That’s the powerful message that resonates as we stand before Goodwill Baptist Church. It is more than just a building. Goodwill Baptist Church is a beacon of faith and community in Los Angeles.
Goodwill Baptist Church began its journey far from here. Reverend James Edward Miles and his wife Romine Miles founded the Goodwill Mission on February 25 1938. The mission started in a humble storefront at 1980 Park Avenue New York City. Only four people attended the first meeting. They were Rev. Miles Mrs. Miles pianist Evelyn Banks and her mother Mrs. Banks.
Clarence Lindsey became the first member in March. Soon Cora Fowler and William Files joined to help. In June Frances Ferguson joined with her children and nieces. This allowed them to organize a Sunday School. Dorothy Miles Viola Canty and Bessie Moone were baptized soon after. Bessie Scott and R. B. Smith also joined this dedicated group.
In October 1939 Goodwill received its charter from New York State. It became known as a Missionary Baptist Church. God blessed Goodwill with a move to 642 Crotona Park South in the Bronx. The church grew from four to sixteen members. Prayer was always important for Christian growth. This helped increase membership significantly.
In 1959 the church purchased 644 and 646 Crotona Park South. Rev. Charles Durden spearheaded a building fund. They received personal loans contributions from friends and sacrificial offerings. Rev. Miles encouraged everyone to hold to God’s unchanging hand. He wanted them to build their hopes on things eternal. The Ground Breaking Service took place on April 29 1962. On February 23 1964 Sis Romine Miles cut the Gleaming Ribbon. The congregation marched into a new sanctuary. Their dream had become a reality.
Goodwill was active in many organizations. These included the Baptist Education Center and the United Missionary Baptist Association. They also participated in the Council of Churches and the Bronx Missionary Workers Union. Goodwill was involved in the Ministers Conference The Progressive Association and the Neighborhood Community Board.
God called Rev. Miles home on May 24 1971. In February 1973 Reverend Rufus Merriweather Thomas became the second pastor. Rev. Thomas continued existing programs. He added new ones such as the President’s Council and a Scouts Movement. Christian Education Summer Day Camp and the Van Ministry were also initiated. A 500000 dollars expansion and renovation took place. Rev. Thomas retired in December 1984. He passed away in January 1990.
Reverend Booker T. Sears Jr. became the third pastor in June 1985. He continues to serve today. Rev. Sears has raised the congregation’s awareness. New programs were added including a Food Bank and Tape Ministry. The Bus Ministry Prayer Partners and Stewardship Classes were created. They also started a Youth Church. Reverend James C. Woodley became the youngest minister. Rev. Sears participates in the Civic Community.
Through leaders like Rev. James E. Miles Rev. Rufus M. Thomas and Rev. Booker T. Sears Jr. Goodwill continues to be blessed. Many other servants have contributed to Goodwill’s legacy. Associate Ministers Deacons Deaconesses Trustees and friends have given their time and effort. It is a legacy of worship work and witness.
Today Goodwill Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community. It is a place where all are welcome to worship work and witness the glory of God.
