Goodwill Baptist Church has a rich spiritual tradition. It stretches back to the 1800s. Between June 19th and December 31st, 1865, a group began worshipping together. Their names were Isreal Flewellen, A. T. Arnold, and James Searcy. Joshua Green and Silas Osborne were among them too. Thomas Benton, Addie Walker, and others also joined. The first meetings were at a brush arbor. It was located by Jackson Creek on the Hutchinson farm. This farm is now known as Levi Rogers farm.
Goodwill Baptist Church has seen several building projects. In 1880, Isreal Flewellen and A. T. Arnold bought land. They purchased one acre from Mrs. Margaret McDonald. They built the first church building there. In 1920, the congregation decided to build again. Construction began in October. In 1934, a third deed was executed for a third building. During the 1960s, the church was remodeled. This process started in 1963. In 1979, the congregation built a fourth building. In 2004, a separate cafeteria was added.
Goodwill’s impact went beyond spiritual growth. The church helped the community academically. They started a public school. In 1895, Mr. George P. Isaacsm was hired as a teacher. Classes were held in the first church building. In 1913, land was purchased for Goodwill Public School. In 1952, more land was bought by the Goodwill Rural Jr. High School District trustees.
The church also had a charitable ministry. It helped the sick and needy financially. This fund became the “Goodwill Benevolent Relief Fund”. In 1943, Dr. J. M. Franklin secured land for a burial ground. It was given to the church’s care.
Goodwill’s pastoral legacy has inspired many. Ministers answered Christ’s call to “Feed my sheep”. B. Johnson, J. Ellis, and Booker were among them. Also B. Connaly, Leaks, and Southern served. Harris, A. Branch, and A. Evans led as well.
In May 2017, the church faced natural and spiritual challenges. Yet, its service and work continue to thrive. Leaders like Elder J. Milam and Elder T. Sullivan stepped up. Elder L. Houser and Deacon T. Hunt helped too. Deacon R. Randle, Deacon J. Howard, and Deacon M. Watts also served. Deaconess C. Milam, Deaconess L. Franklin, and Deaconess J. Ray contributed. Pastor K. Mitchell has demonstrated great leadership. The congregation lost a sanctuary in 2016. The Lord has provided another.
