On a crisp autumn afternoon in 1870, a small but determined group gathered in Goodna. They celebrated the opening of a Primitive Methodist Church. This church, though not the structure you see before you today, represents the spiritual beginnings of what would become the Goodna Uniting Church. The Goodna Uniting Church, located at 13 William Street, stands as a testament to the evolving faith and community spirit of this historic suburb. Goodna, originally known as Woogaroo, transformed from a farming and timber community to a bustling hub connecting Brisbane and Ipswich. The church’s story is interwoven with the town’s growth. The original Primitive Methodist Church, unfortunately, met a watery fate during the devastating 1893 Brisbane flood. It was swept downstream, a dramatic illustration of the power of nature. Undeterred, the congregation rebuilt their church on Smith Street. This building served the community faithfully for many years, until its demolition in 1984. The current Goodna Uniting Church building continues the tradition of service. It’s not just a place of worship for the local community. It also welcomes the Goodna Samoan congregation, reflecting the area’s rich cultural diversity. The church belongs to the Bremer Brisbane Presbytery of the Uniting Church in Australia. It was previously known as St Ives Goodna Uniting Church, a name that echoes the area’s past. Today, Goodna Uniting Church stands as a beacon of faith and resilience. It represents the enduring spirit of a community that rebuilt, adapted, and continued to thrive.
