In the heart of North Quincy, a beacon of faith stands tall: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. A simple question sparked its creation: “What if we built a Lutheran church right here?” This question echoed in the living room of Doug and Dot MacLeod in the late 1950s. A group of Lutherans yearned for a place of worship in their community. They reached out to Pr. Albers, the mission executive, and their dream began to take shape. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church held its first service on January 17, 1960, at the Forbes Community House. Eighty-four souls gathered, united in faith. The following Sunday, Sunday School classes began with 30 eager children. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church quickly became a cornerstone of the community. The church has seen remarkable transformations over the years. Originally part of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church transitioned to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1976. This shift reflected the church’s commitment to inclusivity, welcoming people of all backgrounds. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is a Reconciling in Christ congregation. This means they embrace diversity and welcome everyone to the Lord’s table. The church’s worship services have also evolved. In 1996, a band-led contemporary service was added alongside the traditional hymn-based service. Later, Wednesday night services and monthly Storytelling Church services were introduced, further enriching the spiritual lives of the congregation. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church has undergone several building programs. The original building, constructed in 1967-1968, provided a sanctuary, classrooms, an office, and a small kitchen. Later expansions added a new sanctuary, a nursery, and more educational space. The church even gained a steeple in the 2004-2005 renovation. Throughout its history, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church has been guided by seven pastors, each leaving their unique mark on the congregation. From its humble beginnings in a living room to its current vibrant presence, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church has remained a testament to the power of faith and community.
