Welcome to the Church of the Good Shepherd. This beautiful Romanesque Revival building stands proudly on Broadway in Inwood Manhattan. It’s more than just a church. It’s a living testament to the evolving spirit of Inwood. The cornerstone was laid in 1935. Architect Paul Monaghan designed this stunning structure. Its granite façade and terra-cotta roof are captivating. The three stained-glass windows above the porch are equally impressive.
The Good Shepherd Church story began much earlier. In 1911 the Paulist Fathers purchased land from the Isham Estate. Their goal was to create a great Catholic center in Inwood. Inwood was then considered the unofficial capital of the Irish diaspora. The first church was a simple wooden structure. It stood on a site near the present church. The original building was small. It served a growing community of Irish-Americans. As the population boomed in the 1930s due to the new subway line the need for a bigger church became evident.
The current church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of community resilience. It reflects the growth of Inwood. Originally a predominantly Irish parish it now serves a largely Hispanic congregation. The Capuchin Franciscan Friars now staff the church. They continue the legacy of faith and service.
Inside the church the cavernous space can seat approximately 1000 people. It’s a place of quiet contemplation. It’s also a vibrant center of activity. It hosts masses. It also holds cultural events throughout the year. This incredible building is a beautiful blend of old and new. It seamlessly weaves together Inwood’s history and its present. The Celtic cross atop the church serves as a symbol of its original largely Irish congregation. It is a powerful reminder of its rich heritage. Even amidst this evolution.
