Perhaps you’ve heard whispers of a Beverly Hills landmark. It is a place where Hollywood’s brightest stars have sought solace. Today we are standing before the Church of the Good Shepherd.

This Catholic church has a rich history. It is interwoven with the stories of celebrities and the community. Founded on December 12, 1923, Good Shepherd Parish emerged in a burgeoning Beverly Hills. The Diocese of Los Angeles San Diego was newly established at that time. 1923 was its busiest year.

Designed by James J. Donnellan, the church reflects Mission Revival Style architecture. Bishop John Joseph Cantwell dedicated the building on February 1, 1925. Monsignor John J. Cawley and Reverend Michael J. Mullins also attended. Good Shepherd stands as the oldest church in Beverly Hills.

In 1959, the church underwent renovations. A new marble main altar was added. Also, two side altars enhanced the worship space. Relics of Saints Felicitas and Perpetua, and Saint Vibiana were sealed within the altars. Saint Vibiana is the patroness of the Los Angeles Archdiocese.

Over the years, Good Shepherd became the parish church for many Catholic movie stars. Rudolph Valentino and Bing Crosby both attended Sunday Mass here. Numerous celebrity weddings and funerals have taken place within these walls. Elizabeth Taylor, Loretta Young, Mark Wahlberg, and Carmen Miranda all celebrated their weddings here.

The church has also hosted funerals for notable figures. These include Rudolph Valentino, Carmen Miranda, Gary Cooper, and Alfred Hitchcock. Frank Sinatra’s funeral was held here too.

President John F. Kennedy also attended Mass here. Secret Service members would survey the church beforehand. They designated a pew for the President. A special phone was installed for emergency calls from Washington D.C.

The original stained glass came from France, Germany, the British Isles, and the U.S. Renovations were completed by the Paul Phillips Studio in 1959. The stained glass depicts various saints. John the Evangelist, Saint Patrick, and Saint Joseph are featured. Paul the Apostle, Madonna and Child, and the Good Shepherd are also represented. On the left side, you’ll find the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Saint Peter, and Saint Michael the Archangel.

Good Shepherd continues to be a spiritual home for many. Father Ed Benioff is the current pastor. He succeeded Msgr. Welbers in 2015.

As you leave the Church of the Good Shepherd, remember its history. It is a place of faith and a witness to Hollywood’s golden age. The church remains a beacon of hope in Beverly Hills.
