“What stories do these walls hold?” you might ask as we stand before Gonggunjungang Catholic Church. It is a beautiful and peaceful place of worship. While information about this specific church is limited, we can explore the broader context of Catholicism in Seoul.

The most famous example is Myeongdong Cathedral. It stands as a symbol of the Catholic Church in Korea. The South Korean government declared it a historic site in 1977.

Christianity faced heavy persecution during the Joseon period. Despite this, interest grew, especially among members of the Silhak school. They were drawn to its egalitarian values. Catholicism gained ground in the 19th century through French missionaries.

After Korea concluded a commercial treaty with the United States in 1882, a French priest sought land to build a mission. He acquired a vacant lot on Jonghyeon meaning Bell Hill. Koreans had declined to build there due to its proximity to a Confucian temple.

Emperor Gojong initially opposed the construction of Myeongdong Cathedral. However, he eventually recognized the value of having a Christian cathedral. He conceded to holding the cornerstone ceremony in 1892.

At its construction, Myeongdong Cathedral was the largest building in Seoul. In 1900, relics of Korean Martyrs were moved to its crypt. The Catholic clergy were leading critics of South Korea’s military rule in the 1970s and 1980s. Myeongdong Cathedral became a center for pro-democracy protests.

In 1831, Pope Gregory XVI established the first Apostolic Vicariate in Seoul. He separated it from the Diocese of Beijing. In 1841, he dedicated the Catholic Church in Korea to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Today, Gonggunjungang Catholic Church and other churches like it continue this legacy. They provide spiritual guidance and a sense of community. They stand as testaments to the enduring power of faith in the heart of Seoul. They offer services in Korean and sometimes in English. They welcome people from all walks of life.
