Rising majestically before us stands the Goldener Turm. Its golden hue shimmers in the sunlight a testament to centuries past. This isn’t just any tower. This is the Goldener Turm in Regensburg a symbol of wealth and power in medieval times.
Built around 1250 by a wealthy patrician family the Goldener Turm was one of many such towers erected as status symbols. But this one is special. At 50 meters tall it’s the tallest surviving residential tower north of the Alps. Imagine the view from its top. The city sprawls beneath you a panorama of red roofs and winding streets.
The lower four floors of the Goldener Turm are made of rough-hewn stone. They formed the base a sturdy foundation for the soaring structure. Then came the additions. After 1300 more stories were added culminating in battlements that crowned the top. But the real story is in the details. The pinnacle. Around 1600 a pyramidal roof was added. This roof houses a unique tower room. Built from painted wooden panels it’s a hidden gem. Imagine the artisans carefully painting each panel. The intricate designs must have been breathtaking. This room was conserved in 2019 a testament to its enduring value.
Only the east facade facing Wahlenstrasse displays elaborate window shapes. This was the show face the one designed to impress. The building’s history is full of twists. In the 16th century the facade along with other buildings was painted with frescoes depicting Landsknecht figures and the city’s coat of arms. Imagine the vibrant colors adding to the tower’s grandeur. Traces remained until 1950.
The Goldener Turm wasn’t just a residence. It also served as a city watchtower after the Marktturm burned down in 1706. Interestingly it was one of the few towers in the old town fitted with stairs making it accessible for guards. It even housed a tavern in the 17th century lending to its name the Golden Tower.
