Within Goldenbridge Cemetery’s walls rest the legends of a city. Goldenbridge Cemetery in Dublin is more than just a graveyard. It’s a living testament to history. Opened in 1828 by Daniel O’Connell it was the first cemetery in Ireland to offer dignified burial to people of all faiths. Before this Catholics faced severe restrictions under the Penal Laws. They couldn’t even be buried in Catholic cemeteries.

Imagine the relief. The newfound freedom. Goldenbridge provided a sacred space. A place for Catholic families to mourn and remember their loved ones. A mortuary chapel was built in 1835. It resembled a Roman temple. Beneath it were vaults. Guards and their Cuban bloodhounds lived there. They protected the bodies from body snatchers. These criminals would dig up corpses to sell to medical students. The chapel had an interior staircase. Guards could survey the cemetery from the roof. High walls and railings surrounded the grounds. This kept unwanted visitors out.

Goldenbridge Cemetery isn’t just about the past. It’s a working cemetery today. New burial plots are available. Income from these plots helps maintain and restore this historic site. You can visit the graves of important figures. W T Cosgrave a revolutionary and first President of the Executive Council of the Irish Free State is buried here. His grave was sadly vandalised in 2014 but it was later restored.
