Gazing up at the Golden Mountain Temple, one can’t help but feel a sense of awe. This iconic landmark, also known as Wat Saket, holds a special place in the hearts of locals and tourists alike. The Golden Mountain Temple’s history dates back to the Ayutthaya period. It was originally called Wat Sakae. King Rama I later renovated the temple and gave it its current name when Bangkok became Thailand’s capital. The temple’s most striking feature is the “Phu Khao Thong,” an 80-meter-tall artificial chedi, or Golden Mount. The chedi’s construction was no easy feat. The supporting structure collapsed multiple times before King Rama IV finally reinforced it with concrete. Today, the Golden Mountain Temple is classified as a second-class royal temple. This designation signifies that the temple houses an important pagoda built by members of the royal family. Climbing the 300 steps to the summit is a pilgrimage of sorts. Along the way, you’ll encounter gongs and bells. Tradition dictates that you make a wish and strike the gong three times or ring the bells for good luck. At the top, you’re rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Bangkok. The Golden Mount itself is a place for prayer and reflection. Many visitors write wishes on gold (actually copper) leaves and hang them around the chedi. Back on ground level, explore the temple’s fascinating exhibits. The Buddha’s Footprint, housed in a small sala, is a curious sight. Nearby, a grim display depicts the Vultures of Saket, a chilling reminder of a dark chapter in the temple’s history. During a cholera outbreak in 1820, Wat Saket became a burial ground for the overwhelming number of victims. The temple couldn’t cremate the bodies fast enough, and vultures gathered to feast on the remains. Finally, don’t miss the Luang Por To Shrine. This large, gold-gilded statue is believed to ward off bad karma and bring health and happiness. The Golden Mountain Temple is more than just a tourist attraction. It’s a living testament to Thai history, spirituality, and resilience.
